Periodontal Maintenance in Jenkintown, PA

Keeping treated gum disease from coming back.

Once gum disease has been treated, the mouth needs a different kind of upkeep from a routine cleaning. Periodontal maintenance is that upkeep – more thorough, more often, and measured each time so that any change is caught while it is still a change rather than a loss.

The short answer

Maintenance at MVP Family Dental

Ongoing professional cleanings scheduled every 3-4 months for patients with a history of gum disease to prevent recurrence and maintain gum health.

Gum disease is managed rather than cured. The bacteria that caused it are still in the mouth, and the pockets that formed around the teeth are still deeper than they should be, so they collect deposits faster than a healthy sulcus does.

Maintenance accepts that and works with it: cleaning below the gumline on a shorter cycle, and measuring the pockets each visit so the record shows whether things are holding steady or drifting.

What each visit involves

Measured, then cleaned

A maintenance visit is longer than a routine cleaning and follows a different order, because the measurements are the point as much as the cleaning is.

  1. Charting the pocketsThe depth of the sulcus is measured around each tooth and recorded, so this visit can be compared with the last.
  2. Cleaning below the gumlineDeposits are removed from the root surfaces inside the pockets, not just from the visible crown.
  3. Assessing the responseBleeding points, recession and any mobility are noted – these show how the tissues are responding.
  4. Setting the next intervalHow soon you come back is decided by what today’s chart shows, not by a fixed schedule.

Why it is different

Not the same as a cleaning

The distinction matters because the two appointments have different aims and are not interchangeable.

  • It goes deeperA routine cleaning works at and just below the gumline. Maintenance cleans the root surfaces inside the pockets.
  • It is measuredPocket depths are charted every visit, which turns gum health into something tracked rather than estimated.
  • It is more frequentDeposits return faster in a deepened pocket, so the interval is usually shorter than six months.
  • It is ongoingThere is no point at which a treated mouth graduates back to routine cleanings and stops being watched.

Who needs it

After active treatment

Maintenance follows active periodontal treatment – typically scaling and root planing. It is not a first-line treatment for untreated gum disease, and it is not a substitute for it. Your dentist will tell you which stage you are at and what the plan is.

  • After treatmentMaintenance begins once active treatment has settled the tissues.
  • Shorter intervalsCommonly three to four months, adjusted by what the charting shows.
  • Tracked over timeEach visit is compared against the last, so a change is visible early.

Tell us at each visit

  • Any areas that bleed, feel tender or have started to feel different.
  • Teeth that feel looser, or a bite that has changed.
  • New medications – several affect the gums directly.
  • Whether smoking or diabetes management has changed, as both affect the tissues.

Where the result is actually decided

The cleaning resets the pockets. What happens over the next three or four months is decided by the daily routine, and cleaning between the teeth matters more here than almost anywhere else in dentistry.

If an interdental brush is awkward in a particular spot, say so. There is usually a different size or a different tool that reaches it, and that beats persevering with one that does not.

Gum disease is managed, not cured. The management is what keeps the teeth.

Periodontal Maintenance Questions

How is this different from a regular cleaning?
A routine cleaning works at and just below the gumline. Periodontal maintenance cleans the root surfaces inside deepened pockets and charts the pocket depths at every visit.
Why do I need to come more often?
Deposits build up faster in a deepened pocket than in a healthy one, so the cleaning cycle has to be shorter to stay ahead of them.
Can I go back to normal cleanings?
Gum disease is managed rather than cured, so the pockets and the risk remain. Your dentist will tell you what interval your charting supports.
Does it hurt?
It can be tender where the tissues are inflamed. Tell your hygienist – the approach can be adjusted, and comfort options can be discussed with your dentist.
What happens if I skip appointments?
The pockets collect deposits again, inflammation returns, and the bone supporting the teeth can be lost. Bone that has been lost does not grow back on its own.
Will my gums stop bleeding?
Bleeding usually reduces as inflammation settles, provided the daily cleaning keeps up between visits. Persistent bleeding at the same spot is worth flagging.
Does smoking affect this?
Yes, and significantly. It is worth telling us about any change either way, since it affects how the tissues respond.
How do I book?
Contact our Jenkintown office. If you have had periodontal treatment elsewhere, bring your charting if you can – it gives us a baseline.
